MUSH Sector Conversion Program

The Equipment and Commercial rebate programs came to an end on March 31, 2007. All claims for rebates must be received by May 8, 2007. If you need assistance in completing your application, please call our office at 466-2003.

Take advantage of the natural gas equipment rebates for Municipalities, Universities, Schools and Hospitals that make choosing natural gas equipment more efficient and affordable.

This rebate is available to these organizations that use over 50,000 GJ’s of natural gas annually.

Rebate

  • $2 per GJ of annual estimated natural gas usage.

  • Each MUSH sector building will be eligible for a rebate of up to 50% of the approved costs associated with the conversion.

  • Maximum of $1,000,000 per building or heating plant

    • Provincial Contribution (GMDF) - $1/GJ of annual estimated natural gas usage to a maximum of $500,000

    • Federal Contribution - $1/GJ of annual estimated natural gas usage to a maximum of $500,000

Qualifying Criteria

  • MUSH Sector buildings defined - public institutions such as education, health care, non-profit, municipal and provincial government buildings that on an annual basis will consume over 50,000 GJ’s annually.

  • Each MUSH building operating at an independent civic address that meets all of the criteria qualifies.

  • On an annual basis the building will consume over 50,000 Gigajoules (GJ) per year of natural gas.

  • Only buildings currently using fuel oil or electricity for heating / processing qualify for funding.

  • New MUSH sector buildings being built where natural gas is available do not qualify.

Eligible Costs

  • Equipment and installation (materials and labour) of natural gas equipment and professional fees (engineering or architectural) associated directly with the conversion. Purchased or ‘lease to own’ equipment will qualify.

  • Heritage Gas representatives will work with the organization to ensure that the most efficient equipment for the application is selected. Equipment selection must be pre-approved by Heritage Gas in order to qualify for the rebates.

Rebate Example

Building A:

=
Estimated annual natural gas consumption is 140,000 GJ.
Conversion costs = $750,000
140,000
x $2_____
$280,000 total available rebate

$280,000 is less than the maximum per building of $1,000,000 as well it is less than 50% of $750,000 (total conversion costs) so Building A is eligible for the full $280,000.

This program is co-funded by the Province of Nova Scotia through the Natural Gas Market Development Fund and the Government of Canada, administered by Heritage Gas the local natural gas distribution company. The program is designed to encourage Nova Scotian MUSH sector organizations to convert to natural gas using the highest efficiency equipment available.
