Nova Scotia’s natural gas will flow in parts of Fairview, Clayton Park, Bayers Lake and Bedford in 2010
Ray Ritcey, President of Heritage Gas, today announced that natural gas will flow to customers in certain areas of Fairview, Clayton Park, Bayers Lake and Bedford beginning in September 2010.
Heritage Gas currently provides service to approximately 2,500 residential and commercial customers in Nova Scotia. Natural gas customers are benefiting from significantly lower energy costs and are improving the communities they live in by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It is estimated that in 2009, these customers saved $18 million in energy costs and CO2 emissions were reduced by more than 90,000 tonnes - the equivalent of removing 18,000 cars from Nova Scotia’s roads.
"We want to thank businesses, homeowners and various levels of government for their leadership in making natural gas a success for large areas within the Halifax Regional Municipality," says Ritcey. "We look forward to serving all of the planned future growth areas with a modern, clean, and affordable energy choice for today and the years ahead."
Across North America, natural gas has proven to be a preferred energy choice over oil or coal-based electrical applications, such as heat pumps, both in terms of cost and emissions.
The initial expansion project to Fairview, Clayton Park, Bayers Lake and Bedford West and South is expected to take approximately six months to complete. Finalized routing in certain areas will be determined based upon customer commitments in those areas. Overall, Heritage Gas expects to invest in excess of $30 million in its natural gas distribution system in 2010.
Business and residential customers along the proposed pipeline route will have the opportunity to choose natural gas for heating, water heating, fireplaces, ranges, clothes dryers and barbecues. Natural gas is safe, reliable, clean burning, less costly than other fuels and eliminates the risk and liability of leaking oil tanks.
Heritage Gas is owned by AltaGas Utility Group Inc. an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of AltaGas Income Trust.
