Canada recently introduced a new way to rate gas fireplaces which more
closely reflects how a gas fireplace operates in a home. This rating, called
fireplace efficiency (FE) is a more accurate measurement of fireplace efficiency
than "annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE)" or "steady state". The FE rating is the only recognized measurement of vented gas fireplace energy efficiency in Canada and can be found on the EnerGuide label. The rating is expressed as a percentage. The higher the percentage, the more energy efficient the model. Fireplaces range in efficiency from 20 to 76 percent. In order to qualify for a fireplace rebate as part of the Natural Gas
Equipment Rebate Program your home or business must not be centrally heated
and the fireplace(s) you install must have a minimum EnerGuide rating of
60%. The EnerGuide label is found in promotional material, such as sales brochures or on websites. A listing of models and efficiencies is also on the Natural Resources Canada website. The EnerGuide label provides the energy efficiency rating based on the CSA test standard P.4.1-02, and it will help you to compare the energy efficiencies of various models.
