Sustainable Living for New IKEA Halifax Store

The new IKEA store, located in Dartmouth Crossing, will be opening on September 27, 2017. The 330,000 square foot store will include a large Showroom and Market Hall, a full restaurant, and a children’s play facility. IKEA Halifax has been constructed to be the most sustainable IKEA store in Canada, with a particular focus on energy efficiency and waste avoidance.

This store will be LEED certified gold and is in keeping with sustainability goals that IKEA is striving for globally. The new store will feature:

  • Natural gas
  • Geothermal heating and cooling
  • Rooftop solar photovoltaic system to generate electricity that we will consume on site to minimize demand from the grid
  • Highly reflective roof to reduce solar heating in summer (Energy Star rated)
  • Solar wall
  • 100% LED Lighting and increased natural lighting
  • 10 alternative fuel vehicle premium parking spots
  • 4 electric vehicle charging stations
  • Waste sorting and recycling (cardboard, paper, wood, metal, plastics, glass and ceramics, organics and textile)
  • Customer battery and CFL lightbulb recycling
  • Water conserving plumbing fixtures
  • Storm water treatment
  • ORCA food digester that aerobically processes ~25 pounds of food waste per hour and diverting this volume from the compost stream
