Halifax Regional Municipality staff recently presented their ‘Hydrogen and Decarbonizing Halifax’ staff report to the HRM Environment and Sustainability Standing Committee. The report outlines some of the opportunities, applications, and barriers for low-carbon (or “green”) hydrogen in Halifax. For example, HRM could use low-carbon hydrogen to decarbonize heavy transportation (e.g. large trucks, buses, and trains), space heating and domestic hot water in buildings, and electricity generation.
In 2021, Heritage Gas will be starting to work with key stakeholders to complete a roadmap for the development and deployment of hydrogen in Atlantic Canada. The roadmap will determine the lowest-cost green hydrogen production methods, distribution systems, and best end-uses. It will also identify key enabling conditions for hydrogen development in Atlantic Canada, including the policies, regulations, codes, and standards that will be required.
